Harlequin Duck Hunting

Aleutian Island Waterfowlers  specializes in Harlequin duck hunting for the little trophy Blue ducks,  or as the locals call the Harlequin ducks “rock ducks” due to there inherent location and loving to swim in the waves and current along the rough coastal ledges and Rocks. The state bag limits are 4 harlequin per non resident hunter per year so this is not a green head hunt its a collector hunt.

Where is the best Harlequin Duck hunting

Harlequin are spread out throughout Alaska and one of the more prominent sea ducks.  We have had %100 success in the Aleutian Islands at our Cold Bay adventures lodge harvesting Harlequin Ducks. As our Harlequin populations are very healthy and holding steady. The main question is what do you want to hunt along with them thats what decides your final location.  As Cold bay offers one of the most divers hunts with Pacific Brant, Emperor Geese, Aleutian Teal, 3 species of Scoters and red breasted Mergansers and Pacific Eiders all available on the same huntWe offer harlequin hunting trips in 2 locations Coldbay and Island X although in the name of conservation we limit our hunters to 2 trophy Harlequin on Island X as it is a small island with a small local breeding population of resident birds.

How to hunt Harlequin ducks

Harlequin ducks are hunted best over small strings of custom painted Harlequin decoys from either rocky points or utilizing our layout boats to conceal hunters in fairly shallow water. They are a great decoying bird and will come in close landing in the decoys. Its allot of action and fast paced as these little blue bombers come screaming into the decoys to land. with a little patience and a good location you can be assured of a productive Harlequin Hunt in Cold Bay.

How much does it cost to go Harlequin duck hunting

Prices can vary in Alaska from $1995 for a 3 day hunt to $5600 per full week deluxe lodge Multiple specie Seaduck, Emperor,Harlequin and Brant hunting trip.  We recommend a minimum of our 4 day trip Sat-wed for $3400 in case bad weather and to be able to add on a few more species including Brant, Emperor Geese and some puddle ducks.  But in the big picture after figuring in the travel cost to Alaska a full week deluxe hunt with the option to hunt  up to 12 species make allot more sense and dollar for dollar value if you want a true wxorldlclass experience. All our harlequin hunts include 3 meals daily, deluxe lodging fully guided and outfitted hunts, rd airport transfers from Cold Bay Airport and packaging, tagging and freezing of your birds/

What to expect Harlequin hunting

Harlequin are hunted best with a #6 shot steel or hevishot load as they are a great decoying bird and will come in close landing in the decoys. Its allot of action and fast paced as these little blue bombers come screaming into the decoys to land.

Washington State Shut down all Harlequin hunting

There is no longer any legal harlequin hunting in the Pacific Northwest including Washington State, due to the recent large numbers being harvested and possible population decline, so Alaska is the only option if your looking to harvest some trophy Harlequin ducks.
